Primary Function & Safety:
- Containment: The primary purpose is to contain hazardous fumes, vapors, gases, dusts, mists, and aerosols generated inside the hood, preventing their escape into the lab environment.
- Ventilation: A built-in exhaust system with a blower pulls air from the lab, through the hood opening, and then vents the contaminated air outside the building or through a filtration system.
- Face Velocity Control: Maintains a specific airflow speed (face velocity) at the hood opening to ensure contaminants are effectively drawn into the hood. Many have airflow monitors with alarms to warn of insufficient airflow.
- Physical Barrier: The hood sash acts as a physical barrier between the user and the experiment, offering protection against splashes, spills, and even minor explosions.
- Sash: A movable window (typically vertical sliding and counterbalanced for ease of use) made of safety glass or other transparent material, allowing user access to the work area while providing a barrier. Some hoods have horizontal sashes.
- Tempered or Safety Glass Sash: Designed to shatter in a way that reduces the risk of sharp fragments in case of an explosion.
- Baffles: Adjustable or fixed vertical partitions inside the hood that help to create a uniform airflow pattern and optimize the capture of contaminants.
